Getting There

By air: Leonardo da Vinci (Fiumicino) airport is 26km southwest of the city. The easiest way to getin into the city is by the 'Leonardo Expresse' train which runs every 30 minutes from 6.37am to 11.37pm between the airport and Termini Train Station. The journey takes 35 minutes and costs €9.50. A bus service that operates doesn't run as frequently and is only €0.50 cheaper.

Rome's other airport is Ciampino, about 20km southeast of the city. From there you can catch a COTRAL bus which connects with a subway to Stazione Termini.

By train: Nearly all trains arrive at and depart from Stazione Termini in the city centre. This train station is connected to all other parts of the city via metro and various bus routes.

By bus: Intercity buses’ main destination is the terminal in Piazzale Tiburtina. Different bus companies connect Rome to other Italian cities so shop around for the best price.

Getting Around

On foot: Getting around Rome’s historical centre on foot is manageable, and attractions such as the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, Piazza Navano and the Colosseum are all within walking distance. The Vatican city on the other hand is quite a walk from here and this is when you will need to utilise Rome’s public transport network.

By metro: The city's Metro service has two lines, both of which go through Stazione Termini. Many stops are coveniently beside some of the city's most visited sites.

You need to buy your ticket from a tobacconist, newsstand or vending machine before you get on the train or bus - there are hefty fines for travelling without a ticket.

By bus: Rome’s bus company is ATAC and most of the main buses terminate at the bus station outside Stazione Termini (where you can get a map of the bus routes). Buses run from around 6am to midnight, with some services running throughout the night.

By taxi: Ranks can be found at different locations around the city or phoned at any time of day. There is a set charge once you take the taxi with surcharges once you bring luggage on and also for extra charges. If you are ringing a taxi the driver will turn the meter on as soon as he is rung, rather than when he picks you up. They can also be more expensive at night time.
