As Berlin is such a diverse city, you have the chance of visiting a selection of totally different places, depending on which part of the city you decide to explore. The only trouble is that there are so many areas of the city to socialise in that you won’t know where to start.

The Savigny-Platz in Charlottenburg has loads of exclusive bars and restaurants and is a great place to people watch. Some of the city’s most famous celebrities frequent this area’s bars and nightclubs. Another area where you are likely to see one of Berlin’s elite is around Gendarmenmarkt where most of the city’s trendiest bars are found.

For a more livelier and young crowd, head to the Pariser Straße part of town. There are loads of taverns, bars, along with modern nightclubs. During the summer it is especially busy with most of the nightlife taking part on the surrounding streets.

Bar life is very cultured in Berlin, with cocktail bars often more popular than the ever popular beer gardens. And starting your night off here is late. Don’t think about going to a pub or bar round 9pm. The majority of bars are dead round this time and don’t really kick off until after 10pm, at the earliest. Once it reaches 11pm they city really gets going and becomes very lively.

If the local bars haven’t got you going, your best bet is to visit one of the city’s clubs which don’t get lively until 1am and don’t stop until the sun has risen the next morning. The club scene in Berlin is legendary and very different. You could find clubs that you aren’t likely to find anywhere else in Europe. A lot of the clubs here are quite bizarre and cater for those who have some very strange fetishes.

  • Prater

    Kastanienallee 7-9, Prenzlauerberg, Berlin, Germany

Open-air beergarden, or biergarten as the locals say, which is quite popular with the locals. Nice surroundings and also a good place to be if you are a bit peckish. There's a club next door called 'Bastard' which is good fun.

Open sometime round mid-afternoon until late.

  • Brokers's Bier Borse

    Schiffbauderdamm 8, Berlin, Germany

Drinking in here is a funny experience as you will find yourself drinking beers you weren't planning on drinking. It works like this - whatever beers are most popular are more expensive! Then whatever beer nobody is drinking becomes cheaper. To keep up on whats hot and whats not is a digital screen showing current prices.

  • Bar Lounge 808

    Oranienburgerstrasse 42/43, Mitte, Berlin, Germany

Situated in Mitte where a lot of the tourists are is this very popular bar with a huge aquarium to calm things down and leaving a very relaxed atmosphere.

  • Pfefferberg

Schönhauser Alle 176, Near Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin, Germany

With many different live acts gracing the stage at this venue, it isn't surprising that the crowd comes from all quarters. When bands aren't playing live expect to hear all types of music being played over the speakers. You can also visit the beer garden, techno club and art gallery on the same grounds.

  • Uluru Resort

    Rykestrasse 17, Prenzlauerberg, Berlin, Germany

If you are getting tired of the German beer and fancy downing a few cold VB's this Aussie style pub will sort you out. Live bands play here from time to time.

    Open 2pm-late daily.

  • Kit Kat Club

Bessemerstrasse 2, Near Templehof, Berlin, Germany

If you've heard some crazy stories about Berlin's clubs and want to know what all the fuss is about this is where you will witness everything for yourself. Different theme nights range from gay nights for men on Thursdays where men are advised to wear nothing to Fantasy Outfit nights on Saturdays and Sundays.

Open 8pm-late. Recovery club on Sunday mornings.
